The Mornington Peninsula, a thin though dramatic stretch of land flanked
by two bays and the open sea of Bass Strait, has been a favoured location
for Australia’s leading artists since the 1850s. ‘The Artists’
Retreat’ series has been developed by the Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery as part of its ongoing
commitment to the region, which the Gallery promotes through exhibitions,
publications and the acquisition of works for the Permanent Collection.
Since 1999, the Gallery has displayed a range of exhibitions in the Artists' Retreat Series:
- Master landscapes of the Mornington Peninsula: 1800 to the present, 2009
- A changing land: Devilbend 2009
- Out of the square: Beach architecture on the Mornington Peninsula, 2008
- Aspendale Beach: An artists' haven, 2007
- Devilbend 2007
- The house on the hill, 2006
