At first sight: Peninsula and bay photographs by J W Twycross 1918–1925
An exclusive Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery exhibition
At first sight showcases the pictorialist photography of John William Twycross and his intimate and insightful tale of life in Melbourne and Port Phillip Bay following World War One. Twycross (1871–1939) was an accomplished artist who passionately believed in the aesthetic as well as the documentary potential of photography.
He was a frequent visitor to his mother’s family farm at McCrae on Port Phillip Bay, capturing in his work the ambience of the local creeks, wetlands and vistas and photographing his family at work and play. Using the artist’s original prints and large scale images specially printed from carefully preserved glass plates, this exhibition pays tribute to a man whose early experimentation and ingenuity left an inspired legacy for years to come. |

Michael Shannon: Australian Romantic Realist
An Art Gallery of Ballarat touring exhibition
Michael Shannon was a highly regarded Australian artist of the 1950s to the 1980s. His brightly coloured landscapes and paintings
of the urban metropolis were avidly collected and as frequently displayed as those of his near contemporaries John Brack and Fred
Williams.
Nearly twenty years after his passing, the Art Gallery of Ballarat presents the first retrospective of the work of this major
artist. Drawn from public and private collections across Australia, the exhibition explores the full range of Shannon’s work from his
time as a student through to the vivid landscapes of Victoria that he produced in the last decade of his life. A consummate draughtsman,
a major focus of this exhibition are drawings in which the human figure is present, but seen from afar.

Dorothy Braund: Variations on a theme
A Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery exhibition
This exhibition showcases the accomplished work of Dorothy Braund, a Mornington Peninsula artist, and her life-long ambition to ‘attain the ultimate in simplicity’. Born in Melbourne in 1926, Braund was a notable practitioner of early modernism in Australia and a student of George Bell. Her work was represented in the landmark exhibition Classical Modernism: The George Bell Circle, National Gallery of Victoria, held in 1992. The MPRG is pleased to present a selection of gouaches and drawings recently donated to the Gallery by the artist. |
