2003 Exhibition

Internationally acclaimed artist Lisa Roet won the 2003 National Works on Paper $4000 acquisitive award with her monumental charcoal and crayon drawing, Orangutan finger.

Roet ingeniously combines research into primates into her bold and highly detailed works of art. Her research has taken her as far afield as the jungles of Malaysia and to zoos in Sydney, Brussels and Berlin and she has had major solo exhibitions from New York to Sydney.

Fifty six works were selected for the exhibition from 464 entries across Australia. In addition to Roet’s work, the judges – artist Gareth Sansom; National Gallery of Victoria Curator, Cathy Leahy and Curator at Heide Museum of Modern Art, Zara Stanhope, – selected a further eight works on paper that were felt to be superb examples within their field. The works purchased included Stephen Eastaugh’s delicate wax and pencil drawings on the pages of a salvaged Burmese book, Katherine Hattam’s colourful Homage to the Hotwater Bottle and Deborah Williams’ deft etching of a street dog. Works on paper by David Palliser, Anna Hoyle, Troy innocent, Eissa Sadgrove and Gary Wilson were also acquired.
