Abdul Abdullah VCE Art Tutorial

Abdul-Abdullah.png

VCE students are invited to join Abdullah’s tutorial to hear about the key themes in his practice. See how he draws on all of life’s challenging experiences to create meaningful and authentic work. This tutorial will inspire you to do the same.

As always, we welcome students of all abilities and confidence levels.

This is a free student tutorial generously supported by MPRG and the Mornington Peninsula Shire. Bookings are essential as numbers are limited.

We are thrilled to be welcoming Abdul Abdullah to MPRG to coincide with our New Wave 23 exhibition which celebrates VCE Art and student creativity on the Mornington Peninsula. Abdul is an avid enthusiast of student development and critical thinking so we encourage you to reach out and connect!

Born in Perth in 1986, Abdul is currently based in Sydney and works across painting, photography, video, installation and performance.

Abdul is a five-time finalist in both the Archibald and Sulman Prizes. He is a seventh generation Muslim-Australian with Malay/Indonesian and convict/settler Australian heritage. A multi-disciplinary artist who playfully and seriously tackles issues of difference, marginalisation and identity in his art.

Abdul was 15 when September 11 happened and his world transformed into one where Muslims were perceived as 'evil’ in popular discourse. In 2011 he was a finalist in the Archibald Prize for his portrait of Waleed Aly and received hate mail for his portrait, telling him to ‘go back to where he came from’.

Abdul is represented in many significant galleries in Australia and internationally, including the National Gallery of Australia, The National Gallery of Victoria, The Art Gallery of New South Wales and The Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney. He has exhibited in New Zealand, Hong Kong, Paris, Chiangmai and was shortlisted to represent Australia in the 2019 Venice Biennale.

In 2023 Abdullah will be included in the inaugural PORTRAIT23 at the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra, and The National 4 at the Art Gallery of NSW.
