This event is presented as part of Front Beach, Back Beach (FBBB), an exciting new project delivered by Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery and Deakin University's Public Art Commission. FBBB has commissioned leading Australian artists to respond to key sites and stories that have shaped the Mornington Peninsula. For the full program visit www.fbbb.com.au

Join artist Vera Möller in conversation with local diver and photographer Myra Kelly and her dive partner Paola Bottari to discuss Vera’s work Submarine Gardens.

Reflecting on her original studies in the fields of Microbiology and Limnology (Freshwater Ecology), Möller’s practice focuses on the marine environments of the Great Barrier Reef and the Victorian coast, Port Phillip and Western Port Bays.

Submarine Gardens responds to the growths and constellations of sponges and seaweed attached to the piers wooden piles underwater. These carpet-like growths are expanding vertically all over the pylons and are fully visible in their intricacy and complexity only to divers and snorkelers. The purpose of the work is to draw attention to these stunning but relatively ‘secret’ sites and invert what’s going on below sea level to the invisible visible. With this artwork Moller seeks to draw attention to the rich diversity of these exciting living submarine communities that remain hidden from the view of most of us.

Audiences are encouraged to bring their own snorkelling equipment, and explore under in a self-guided snorkel. Children must be accompanied by adults.
