Expanding on the ideas and processes used in the Our Way series, this printmaking workshop invites participants to collaborate and create their own translation of Our Way (Can Do) print (as featured in the exhibition) using screen painting techniques. Drawing on abstract forms and imagery that relate to signage and symbology, participants will create their own take home piece with guidance by Lisa and the Spacecraft Studio staff.

Our Way is an ongoing series of work that spans various media to explore the power and peril of the directional sign, its ability to control, repress and disorientate First Nations people on their own land. By altering the text and changing the symbology of existing signage – such as stop, give way, and sharp deviation signs – these works create new directives back to Country and culture.

Beginners and printmaking aficionados welcome! All materials included. Please bring an apron and allow time to find a street park as studio parking is limited.

Lisa Waup is a mixed-cultural First Peoples woman, multidisciplinary artist and curator, born in Naarm (Melbourne), and her practice is studio-based and involves the creation of objects with a strong connection to symbology and materiality. These objects connect her to family, Country, history and story, and her work explores personal experiences but also a broader historical narrative.

Waup works across weaving, printmaking, photography, sculpture, textiles and installation and her work eloquently illustrates her life’s journey through discovery and connection. Waup’s practice highlights the importance of tracing lost history, ancestral relationships, Country, motherhood and time which ultimately are woven stories of her past, present and future into contemporary forms.
