Steve Carr and Louise Rippert: In conversation

For the second iteration of Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery’s ambitious new Collection+ series, we bring together new and existing work by Melbourne based artist Louise Rippert alongside dynamic New Zealand contemporary artist Steve Carr.

Join us in conversation, with Collection+ Louise Rippert / Steve Carr curator Ainsley Gowling and MPRG Director Danny Lacy. This is a free event but we ask you to register to let us know you are coming! Drinks and nibbles will be offered on arrival.

Steve Carr is one of New Zealand’s leading contemporary artists. With his ‘trickster’ and boyish larrikin qualities, Steve predominantly works with film, sculpture and photography and uses aspects of everyday life as the source material for his art practice. This can be seen in his exhibited works Burn Out 2009, Skyline Mk 111 2022 and Skimming Stones 2005. Steve’s practice is primarily concerned with constructing scenarios in which a given situation is complicated by questions of translation.

Steve is the founder of the Blue Oyster Art Project Space in Dunedin and his works are held in several public collections throughout Australia and New Zealand including the Auckland Art Gallery, Toi o Tāmak Christchurch Dunedin Public Art Gallery, Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, and the National Gallery of Victoria.

Louise Rippert - Since completing her Masters at Monash University in 2002, Louise has continued her art practice from a shared studio space in Windsor, affectionally known amongst her peers as “The House of Windsor”. Whilst she is perhaps best known for creating detailed works on paper, her practice also explores sculpture, both permanent and ephemeral, as well as light-based public installation works. Louise has exhibited largely within curated or group exhibitions as well as a small number of solo shows held within the public and commercial gallery sphere. She has been fortunate to undertake collaborative international artist residencies and exhibit in her second home, India.
