Join acclaimed artist Helen Britton for a hands-on workshop exploring transformation, material storytelling, and making-with-what-we-have. Spend time with the artist in an intimate, conversational setting, learning to make string while engaging in discussion around materials, process, and ideas central to her practice.

Drawing on her long-standing use of repurposed materials, Helen will guide participants through the process of turning old clothing into handmade ‘string’ or yarn. This simple but powerful technique transforms everyday textiles into new material for creative expression.

Participants are encouraged to have experienced the exhibition prior to attending and to bring along one question to contribute to a shared conversation during the workshop.

Set within the natural surrounds of Police Point Shire Park, this workshop invites participants to slow down, engage with their hands, and rethink the life cycle of materials—connecting personal histories, sustainability, and creative play.

Participants will learn and experiment with techniques to deconstruct and re-make textile materials, including:

  • Selecting and preparing suitable garments (e.g. old cotton and silk clothing)
  • Stretching and rolling fabric to create strong, flexible “yarn”
  • Joining lengths to create continuous strings

The session encourages experimentation rather than perfection — having a yarn whilst making beautiful yarn, sculptural forms, or small wearable objects. No prior experience is needed and afternoon tea will be supplied.

Materials are not included; please bring:

  • Old cotton or silk clothing that you are happy to tear or cut up
  • Scissors suitable for cutting fabric
  • & your question for Helen to share with the group!

Location: Cottage 2, Police Point Shire Park, Portsea.
After entering Point Nepean National Park, Franklands Drive is the first street on the right. Cottage 2 is on the corner of Franklands Drive & Defence Road. Park in the gravel car park opposite the cottages.
