Orizome Workshop: The Japanese art of folding and dyeing paper

Join Jacky Cheng, an artist based on Yawuru Country in Broome, WA, for an introduction to Orizome, the Japanese art of folding & dyeing paper.

Combining simple paper-folding techniques with vibrant layers of colour, Orizome transforms ordinary sheets into intricate geometric patterns, revealing surprising & beautiful designs as each piece is unfolded.

In this hands-on workshop, participants will experiment with repeated folds & dip-dyeing methods to create their own unique artworks. As colour travels through the folds, unexpected shapes, rhythms & patterns emerge. Like a thumbprint, no two creations will ever be exactly the same.

Suitable for beginners & experienced makers alike, this playful & accessible workshop encourages creativity, experimentation & mindful making.

Participants will leave with a collection of colourful Orizome papers & an understanding of a traditional Japanese process that blends craft, design & artistic expression.

No prior experience required & drop in anytime between 1.30 - 3.30pm. Suitable for all ages. Children under 8 years may require adult assistance.

Jacky Cheng is a visual artist, educator & facilitator based on Yawuru Country in Broome, Western Australia. Born in Malaysia & of Chinese heritage, Jacky's multidisciplinary practice explores themes of identity, migration, cultural memory & belonging through paper, fibre and sculptural forms. With a background in architecture, she is recognised for her intricate works that combine repetition, folding & craftsmanship to transform humble materials into complex spatial compositions.

Jacky is a finalist in the National Works on Paper prize & has been the recipient of major national awards including the John Stringer Prize & the Fremantle Print Award.
