MPRG Curator, Laura Castagnini will lead the conversation with exhibiting artist James Tylor and Leigh Robb, Curator of Contemporary Art at the Art Gallery of South Australia.

They will discuss James Tylor: Turrangka...in the shadows, a powerful touring exhibition from UNSW Galleries. The exhibition delves into themes of identity, history, and cultural connection, blending Tylor's artistic practice with his deep exploration of Indigenous culture and Australian history.

James Tylor, a highly regarded artist of Kaurna heritage, uses his work to explore the ongoing legacies of colonialism, cultural identity, and the connection between land and memory. Turrangka… in the shadows is a personal and evocative reflection on these complex themes, drawing from Tylor’s unique perspective as an Indigenous Australian artist. The exhibition combines photography, video, and installation to examine how cultural narratives, oral histories, and ancestral connections can be visualised through contemporary art practices.

The title of the exhibition, Turrangka… in the shadows, is a reference to the Kaurna word "Turrangka," which refers to the act of remembering or a shared memory.

Leigh Robb is an Australian curator and writer, known for her work in contemporary art. Her curatorial practice focuses on exploring themes of identity, materiality, and the intersection of art with social and environmental issues. Robb has curated numerous exhibitions and written extensively on contemporary art, with an emphasis on emerging artists. She is dedicated to fostering dialogue within the art community and expanding public engagement with contemporary visual culture.
