** Please note the program starts at 10.30am at MPRG where we will talk to Jon about his work in the 2026 Nationla Works on Paper Prize. From there we will drive to The Nook (5 mins) to begin the class. Ride sharing is encouraged **

Join one of Australia's most respected contemporary artists, Jon Cattapan, for a rare, hands-on masterclass that offers a unique insight into the creative processes behind his celebrated drawing and printmaking practice.

Presented in conjunction with Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery (MPRG's) National Works on Paper exhibition, this special workshop experience begins at MPRG where participants will meet Jon and view his exhibited work, Containment Suite (2024). Jon will discuss the ideas, methods and materials that inform his practice before the group travels to The Nook Studios & Galleries for an immersive studio workshop.

Drawing on techniques Jon has developed throughout his distinguished career, participants will explore the dynamic relationship between drawing and mono-printing.

Through guided experimentation, Jon will demonstrate how photographs, photocopies, tracing methods and printmaking processes can be combined to create layered, evocative images on paper. Participants will work from personal objects and images that hold meaning for them, using these as a starting point for developing new visual ideas and discovering unexpected creative outcomes.

The day concludes with an informal group tutorial and discussion, offering participants the opportunity to share their discoveries, reflect on their work and receive feedback from Jon.

The workshop is suitable for artists, students and enthusiastic beginners interested in expanding their drawing processes and exploring new ways of working with paper-based media.

A finalist in the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes, and represented in major collections across Australia and internationally, Jon Cattapan is one of Australia's most respected contemporary artists. Opportunities to learn directly from an artist of his calibre are rare, making this a special opportunity for artists, students and anyone interested in contemporary drawing and printmaking.

Please bring a snack or lunch (there's fridge on site) & I'll make some afternoon tea!

Participants are asked to bring personal objects, photographs and photocopies that hold particular meaning to them, as these materials will form the basis of their creative explorations throughout the workshop.

MPRG will supply the following workshop materials:

  • Quality Cotton paper
  • A4 and/or A3 writing paper
  • Tracing/drafting paper
  • Coloured pencils and/or watercolours
  • PVA glue
  • A selection of oil paints and palette
