Join us at MPRG for a special In-Conversation event with acclaimed Australian artist Katherine Hattam and MPRG Collections Curator Stephanie Sacco, as they explore the personal and artistic journey behind Hattam’s distinctive practice.
This intimate discussion will delve into Katherine's formative years—growing up in 1950s and ‘60s Melbourne, her early influences, and the powerful threads of family, feminism, and literature that continue to shape her work. With warmth and insight, Katherine will share the stories and processes that inform her work, from drawing and collage to her signature use of domestic objects and found text.
The conversation will centre around Katherine compelling work To the Beach, featured in MPRG’s current exhibition Do You Read Me, revealing the ideas and inspirations behind this richly layered piece.

About Katherine Hattam
Born in Melbourne in 1950, Katherine Hattam is a distinguished Australian artist whose multidisciplinary practice encompasses painting, drawing, collage, printmaking, and sculpture. Her work frequently interrogates language, particularly the written word, as well as themes of domesticity, family, and self. Hattam's first exhibition was in 1978 at Melbourne’s Ewing and George Paton Gallery. She holds a BA in Literature and Politics from the University of Melbourne (1974), an MFA in Painting from the Victorian College of the Arts (1992), and a PhD from Deakin University (2004).
