Portraiture Masterclass: with Jaq Grantford

Meet at 9am at MPRG to view Jaq's portrait of Noni Hazlehurst, Through the window, prior to commencing the workshop at 10am at The Nook Gallery & Studios.

$190 per person, includes exhibition entry at MPRG, all workshop materials and tea/coffee on arrival at The Nook.

Join Jaq’s masterclass to learn the process of creating a portrait using oils as the medium. Jaq will demonstrate her practice of working from a photo to create the portrait and you will learn how to block in the form, capture a likeness, modelling, tone, and use of colour.

Bring a photo of a loved one or someone you would love to paint. Once registered, we will be in touch to discuss your image and suggest ways in which it may be prepared in readiness to transfer to the painting surface.

You will learn each step:

- Starting with a tonal ground
- What to keep and take out of the photo reference, so it’s your own art
- Blocking in the portrait
- Colour mixing
- Effective techniques
- Ensuring you have the likeness and essence of the person
- Tying everything together
- Varnish options

All levels of artistic ability are welcome and materials will be supplied. It is essential to book as numbers are limited to 12 participants. Please bring an apron and your lunch if you do not wish to purchase lunch or a snack!

Jaq Grantford is an ARC Associate Living Artist (Arc Renewal Centre) based in Melbourne and specialises in fine art and portraiture. She has participated in numerous exhibitions, being an Archibald finalist, and winning the Darling Portrait Prize with the National Portrait Gallery of Australia.

Her work is held in the MEAM Museum (European Museum of Modern art), the National Portrait Gallery of Australia, the National Gallery of Victoria and many other collections. She has had a love of art for all her life and a particular fascination with portraits and personalities.
