Weaving Together: collective paper weaving with Jacky Cheng

Cheng_4_MPRG.jpg

Join visiting Western Australian artist Jacky Cheng for a three-hour, hands-on paper weaving workshop celebrating Jacky's inclusion in the National Works on Paper 2024 exhibition.

Learn to make thread from Kozo paper, a traditional technique specific to the Japanese paper tradition. This beautiful transformation takes time and some elbow grease but with guided steps from the beginning and Jacky's demonstrations throughout, you can weave at your leisure and still marvel at the results!

We will weave with a Rigid Heddle Loom using a short length of the paper thread which will form part of a collective community paper fabric. There will also be a 'take-home' component, a favourite part for all workshop participants!

Jacky Cheng is a contemporary artist, a facilitator and an art educator working with fibres, sculpture and installation. She was born in Malaysia of Chinese heritage, received her Bachelor of Architecture (Honours 1) from University of New South Wales, and since 2006, has been based in Broome, Western Australia.

Please meet in the small gravel carpark on site at the residency at Monmar (Police Point Shire Park & Point Nepean National Park).

Address: 1 Franklands Drive, Portsea, VIC 3934.

The workshop will take place in the cottage studio where Jacky will be completing her MPRG AiR (Artist in Residence). MPRG AiR is the Mornington Peninsula Shire's Artist in Residence program, facilitated by Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery.

All materials are provided but  please bring a light snack for the break. Tea and coffee will be provided.
